HOW A ROBOT MAKES LIGHT FIXTURE TESTING EFFICIENT

—— Energy efficiency is the order of the day for companies as well as households: rising costs make those products more attractive, that have a built-in sensibility for budget and climate factors.

With this in mind, TÜV SÜD introduced a new seal at the end of last year, evaluating lamps and light sources from this point of view. The seal is based on the European Energey-Related Products Directive (ErP).

To achieve the most precise results in the necessary tests, TÜV SÜD experts rely on a modern assistant dubbed Robogoniometer by its German manufacturer. The robot uses two freely adjustable sensors to measure the distribution, intensity and density of light as well as the service life of the fixtures. Previously, employees had to repeatedly take measurements at different spots in the room in order to collect the necessary data.

During testing, the Robogoniometer now does this fully automatically – around the clock, seven days a week. This reduces the required labor hours by around 50 percent and at the same time provides more robust data on the basis of which TÜV SÜD can issue the seal – not only for household light bulbs, but also for medical operating lights or the lighting of greenhouses.

The Robogoniometer can measure the density and distribution of light, providing data for the TÜV SÜD certification.
